22nd ANNUAL SHARK TOURNAMENT
$1,000,000 PRIZE POOL IN 2008!!
The biggest question facing the anglers competing in the 22nd Annual Star Island Yacht Club Shark Tournament is whether this will become the 1st Shark Tournament only to pay out over $1,000,000 in cash, trophies and other prizes !!
The Star Island Shark Tournament is known throughout the USA as the "Crown Jewel" of Shark Tournaments as the total PAYOUT just keeps on growing year after year!! Last year the 21st Annual Star Island Shark Tournament paid out over $900,000 in cash, plus trophies and other prizes. Last year big $$$ winner with a 359 lb. Thresher was the "Tuna Tangler", owned by Tom Hansen, whose record winnings totaled over $466,000. Amazing enough there were 2 larger fish weighed in during the 2 day tournament; a 374 lb. Thresher caught on George Grasso's "Three G's" which earned the crew over $298,000 and a 372 lb. Mako landed aboard Bob Bascnagel's "F.I.S.H.".
So mark your calendars for June 12th -14th as the 22nd Annual Star Island Yacht Club Shark Tournament is the place you'll want to be. Last year a record 244 Sport Fishing Boats crewed by over 1,500 anglers competed for over $900,000 in cash plus trophies and other prizes. The Captain's meeting will be held on Thursday June 12th with fishing Friday and Saturday June 13th and 14th. Following Saturday's fishing the Awards Ceremony and Dinner will be held accompanied by live music and dancing afterwards.
For Those anglers who wish go get in on the action but do not own a boat, Star Island Yacht Club is home to 16 of Montauk's finest and most knowledgeable Charter Captains. Their boats range in size from 28' - 43' and can accommodate up to 6 anglers and are available for one or both days of the tournament.
In addition to this outstanding competition, all sportsmen can contribute to the studies of the Shark species by tagging and releasing Sharks that don't meet strict weight requirements. Last year over 325 Sharks were released back to the Ocean. Of those Sharks that made it to the weigh station over 1,200 pounds of edible Shark meat was donated to the Long Island Council of Churches food pantry to help feed those in need.
