23rd ANNUAL SHARK TOURNAMENT

We’ve all heard that phrase - “You have to be in it to win it”!!! Once again that saying held true at the 22nd Annual Star Island Yacht Club Shark Tournament. Last years tournament paid out over $760,000 in cash, custom trophies, and other prizes. Last years big $$$ winner was a 173lb Mako landed on day 1 by Greg Lesiewicz which won the crew on Capt Dave Walters “The Reel Deal” a cool $270,000.

The Heaviest Shark in the tournament, a 353lb Thresher, was caught by 16 year old John A. Digertt aboard his fathers boat the “Reel Crazy” and paid out over $158,000. In addition to the prizes, the crew of the “Reel Crazy” was invited to the 2009 IGFA Offshore World Championship in May of 2009, in Cabo San Lucas Mexico, as the Star Island Annual Shark Tournament is a qualifying tournament for that event!!

So mark your calendars for the 23rd Annual Star Island Yacht Club Shark Tournament to be held from June 18th - 20th. The Captains meeting will be held on Thursday June 18th with fishing Friday and Saturday June 19th and 20th. The Awards Ceremony and Dinner will follow fishing on Saturday night accompanied by live music and dancing under the stars!!
For those anglers who wish to get in on the action and don’t own a boat, The Star Island Yacht Club Charter Fishing Fleet is home to Montauk’s finest and most knowledgeable Charter Captains. Their boats can accommodate up to 6 Anglers and are available for ONE or BOTH days of the Tournament!!

In addition to this outstanding competition, all sportsmen can contribute to the studies of the Shark by tagging and releasing sharks that don’t meet strict weight requirements. Last year over 400 sharks were released back to the ocean. Of the sharks that were weighed in over 1,200 pounds of edible shark meat was donated to the Long Island Council of Churches food pantry to help feed those in need!
