Star Island Yacht Club to Host Its 22nd Annual Mako & Thresher Mania Tournament

Wednesday, July 9, 2014

Star Island Yacht Club will host the 22nd Annual Mako and Thresher Mania Tournament, starting with the Captain’s Meeting on July 31 at 7:30 p.m. and fishing on August 1 and August 2 from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Cash prizes will be awarded for the largest Makos and Threshers. This is one tournament that passionate sport fishermen do not want to miss out on!

Over $111,000 in cash, plus custom trophies and other prizes were awarded in last year’s event, with 240 anglers aboard 33 boats competing for top honors. Captain James Gravle aboard his boat “Dream Catcher” hauled in a 289-pound Thresher. That catch was named Heaviest Thresher of the Day and the Tournament. Rob Padula on Captain Frank Rotundo’s “Am Sam” caught the Heaviest Mako of the Day and the Tournament — a staggering 203 pounds.

On the second day of the tournament, Captain Gary Ramesberger on his boat “Better Days” had the best day. A Thresher weighing in at 260 lbs. netted Mr. Ramesberger and his crew second place for Heaviest Thresher of the Day and 2nd Heaviest Thresher of the Tournament. Also on the second day, Tony Sansevario snagged a 186-pound Mako aboard Captain Rob DiNoto’s boat, earning the crew 2nd Heaviest Mako of the Tournament honors.

The entry fee for this year’s tournament is $600 per boat. For anglers who would like to get in on the action but do not own a boat, the Star Island Yacht Club Charter Boat fishing fleet is available for hire for one or both days of the tournament.

Dockage is on a first-come, first-serve basis. Transient rates for this tournament are $5.50 per foot plus $30.00 for utilities (electric, water and cable TV) per day, payable in advance.
